Details of previous projects
Vhutshilo Mountain School ARV workshops
Our NGO is Vhutshilo Mountain School in Tshikombani. The mission of the school is to provide severely underprivileged orphans and children, aged 2 to 8, with the highest possible standard of personalized care, stimulation and education to equip them with a solid base on which to build their future.
HIV/AIDS is a huge problem in South Africa. Volunteers last year helped around the school supervising children during their break times and attending performances by the children. The volunteers also had the chance to help with some construction work within the school.
Lovelife HIV Initiative program
LoveLife is South Africa's largest national HIV prevention initiative for young people. They combine a sustained high-powered campaign with nationwide community-level outreach and support programmes to promote healthy, HIV-free living among South African teens. Volunteers were able to put a personal spin on the program curriculum and taught it at a local secondary school.
Volunteering with Thoyhoyandou Victim Empowerment program (TVEP)
TVEP provides support and advocacy to women and children survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence. Due to the confidential nature of the work our involvement with the scheme mainly includes admin or construction.
Setting up sports clubs for children within the local community
Last years volunteers set up an after school netball club at the local primary school. Many children from the area came to play netball and the volunteers found this very fulfilling and enjoyable.
Providing help to smaller projects within the area of Tshikombani
Last years volunteers founded a small drop-in centre for disadvantaged children. The volunteers assisted the centre by providing food aid and teaching assistance.
